Centre Assistant Vacancy – 37 hours per week

We are looking for a proactive and friendly Centre Assistant to join our front of house reception team.  Hours of work from 7am – 11pm, working a variety of shifts. 


Job Summary

To assist in the efficient operation of Grange Leisure Centre with the responsibility for the daily running of front of house reception, events, functions and classes in the centre. 


Responsibilities and Duties

  • Proactively maintain a safe and clean environment for work colleagues and customers through regular checks, cleaning and tidying, confirmed by completing daily checklists and procedure logs, in the absence of the Caretaker, requesting salt from Grounds Team if icy.
  • To prepare the centre for opening and closing times: daily cleaning and vacuuming in the gym, preparation of coffee area in Reception, re-stocking vending machines etc.
  • Regular hourly checks and signatures to ensure that the centre’s toilet facilities are maintained to a suitable standard of cleanliness.
  • Check areas of the centre for any health & safety issues including the collection of litter, inside or out including AGP and cellar for any full bottle bins/empty barrels etc.
  • To check the schedule and complete setups/set downs of functions taking place the in Main Hall/Stratton Suite in a timely manner, including assistance with the marquee in the Main Hall.
  • To carry out checks and risk assessments before and after each class to ensure the cleanliness and safety of the public areas, specifically the Main Hall and Stratton Suite.
  • Sweep and or wash the Main Hall/Stratton Suite when empty.
  • Provide detailed handover to colleagues coming on shift, highlighting any issues to be dealt with the next day.
  • Work with Caretaker or Security in the opening/closing of the centre
  • Be solely responsible for the continual tidiness and cleanliness of the centre by regular glass and rubbish collection, emptying bins, highlighting maintenance issues to facilities, cleaning areas noticeably in need of refreshing etc.
  • Preparing the Coffee Shop in readiness for opening hours and ensure service and seating areas are cleared and cleaned regularly.
  • Prepare, serve and sell food and drinks in the Coffee Shop, ensuring a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.
  • To be a proficient user of the Grange Leisure data booking software to take and update bookings, issue of equipment hire and receipts for all activities.
  • To deal with all enquiries by telephone or in person to ensure customers are not left waiting.
  • Cash handling in both reception and bar, plus refunds from vending machines if appropriate, including reconciliation of cash register at end of shift.
  • Meet and greet AGP and hall users, unlock AGP and remain until users of the AGP or hall are happy. Make regular checks throughout the booking to provide excellent customer service to customers.
  • Opening up and locking of AGP for hire users, and pay to play. Collection of cash for pay to play.


Qualifications and Skills

  • To be polite and courteous at all times in contact with the public and colleagues.
  • Display excellent customer service skills with the ability to take the lead on problem solving enquiries from the public.
  • Effective communication skills, with the ability to work in a team and pass on information.
  • Display initiative in seeking out jobs, and working alone with the minimum of supervision.
  • Familiarity with appropriate Health and Safety legislation, and risk assessments.
  • Customer focused at all times with internal and external customers.
  • Trained first aider.
