Your parish council

Stratton St Margaret is a thriving community, deep in history with St Margaret and the Dragon. We have a population of approximately 23,000 residents! Although we are a Parish we are larger than some small towns.

Stratton St Margaret Parish Council has developed into one of the largest Parish Councils in the country and is a member of the Local Council Award Scheme, a nationally recognised scheme that demonstrates that the Council is managed effectively and has an elected mandate.

The Parish is separated into five Wards, which are represented by 18 Councillors. One of our main priorities is to provide high quality, well maintained open spaces including safe, interesting and innovative play areas.

Parish versus Borough Council

Parish councils operate at a level below district and borough councils and in some cases, unitary authorities.

They’re elected and can help on a number of local issues, like providing:

  • Allotments
  • Burials
  • Community Centres
  • Play Areas & Play Equipment
  • Grants to help local organisations
  • Consultation on neighbourhood planning

Swindon Borough Council Logo

Borough councils cover a smaller area than county councils, but larger than parishes.

They’re usually responsible for services like:

  • Rubbish Collection
  • Recycling
  • Council Tax collections
  • Housing
  • Planning Applications
  • Highway & Street Light Maintenance
